At the end of July 2011 the congregation moved out of the building to allow the development
work to take place. Sunday services are being held at the University of Dundee Chaplaincy.
There is a lot of preparation work to be done before the contractors can start - to see pictures
of what has been happening at The Steeple since we moved out please click here

Below is an overview of the Development Project
Over several years, there has been an increasing realisation that our buildings, while strategically positioned in the heart of the city, are not in a fit state to serve our needs or those of the surrounding community that we seek to serve.
The journey of seeking God’s will and the practical means to redevelop our church complex to make it ‘fit for purpose’ for the ministry and mission of our congregation now and in the years to come has been a long one, but the Kirk Session believes that we are now at the right time to make a start.
We have retained our central vision of eventually achieving the complete modernisation and refurbishment of the entire building complex. However, over the past months we have been working with the architects on new plans for the complex that can be achieved in several steps,
PHASE ONE DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL
The Steeple Church Kirk Session proposes that the first stage of the development of the complex should focus on the transformation of the west-half of the complex, including:
- Renewing and rationalising electrical wiring, security, fire safety provision and insulation / heat efficiency measures.
- Modernising our current worship space to provide a large, well-equipped meeting area, suitable for our congregational needs and for other groups requiring, for example, a conference or concert venue.
- Modernisation and redesign of the appearance of the central corridor to create an attractive entrance area, including glazed doors at both the Nethergate and Overgate ends.
- Creation of a new, well-lit ‘Welcome Area’ in the current back vestibule / counting house / buckie space with large central glazed doors through to the worship space and from the central corridor
- Enlargement & complete refurbishment of the ground floor toilets.
- Modernisation and redesign of the current Steeple Lower Hall, including the creation of a high quality modern kitchen facility at its south end.
- The insertion of a lift to access the Lower Hall and new kitchen, Upper Halls and offices, Mary Slessor Conference Hall corridor and the proposed integrated upper floor (to be created above the Slessor Centre Sports Hall in a subsequent phase of development).
- Refurbishment and re-design of the current vestry, and welcome hall spaces to provide office/reception, counselling, and meeting space.
- Should funds permit within this stage, work will include refurbishment and redesign of the current Steeple Upper Hall, the Mary Slessor Conference Hall and the adjacent corridor, toilets and office space.
Subsequent stages of development will include
- The creation of a new integrated upper floor, by the splitting of the Mary Slessor Sports Hall, the development of the Sports Hall balcony and linkage with the Slessor Conference Hall
- Extensive refurbishment and redesign of the ground floor spaces within the Mary Slessor Centre, including improvement in natural light and direct linkage of this area with the central corridor and entrances.
